Open Enrollment for the Florida Prepaid College Program Has Arrived! Get a Promo Code for $25 Off, Plus Learn About the “Pay Off Your Plan Giveaway”!

This post is sponsored by the Florida Prepaid College Board, through my role as a Believer Blogger. All thoughts are my own.

Several weeks ago, I introduced you to the amazing Florida Prepaid College Program, which offers five different plans that allow Florida families to start saving for their children’s college or university education. My family purchased Florida Prepaid college plans for all four of my children when they were babies, and now my two oldest sons have received bachelor’s degrees from Florida universities debt-free thanks to our foresight. There are several huge advantages to saving early with a Florida Prepaid plan, such as:

Lower Payments: The earlier a family starts saving, the more opportunity there is to spread the payments, which lowers the monthly contribution necessary to reach college savings goals.

Avoid Rising College Costs: The guarantee of a Prepaid Plan allows you to avoid worrying about future college costs. Bloomberg estimates that since 1985, the cost of college has increased 538% -- more than twice as fast as medical costs (286%) or gasoline (200%).

Avoid Debt: No matter what the future cost of college is, planning now allows families to help the children in their lives start their career after college with less, or no, debt. Student loans are now the no. 2 source of debt in America as reported by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, behind only mortgages. These loans make up more than $1.4 trillion, or about 10 percent of all U.S. household debt. One in six American adults, or 44 million people, has a student loan.

Fortunately, my two oldest boys aren’t in that statistic, and my hope is that my two current teenagers will also graduate with a university degree debt-free thanks to their Florida Prepaid College Plans.

The Florida Prepaid College Board’s annual Open Enrollment period is Oct. 15, 2017–Feb. 28, 2018.

Open Enrollment is the only time of the year families can purchase a Florida Prepaid College Plan. During this time, families can select one of five Prepaid Plans, each with specific costs, payment schedules and benefits, which all include tuition and other specified fees at 28 Florida Colleges or 12 State Universities. (Families can open a 529 Savings Plan account at any time of the year.) Though each option is designed to be used at a Florida College or State University, the amount covered by the plan can also be applied to other schools nationwide.

What Prepaid Plan options are available?

2-Year Florida College Plan: The 2-Year Florida College Plan covers tuition and other specified fees for 60 lower division credit hours at a Florida College. This plan offers a child the opportunity to earn an associate’s degree or trade certification in any number of fields, and is an excellent springboard to a fulfilling career or further education.
4-Year Florida College Plan: The 4-Year Florida College Plan covers tuition and other specified fees for 60 lower division credit hours and 60 upper division credit hours at a Florida College -- the amount generally required to earn a bachelor’s degree.
2 + 2 Florida Plan: The 2 + 2 Florida Plan covers tuition, tuition differential fee and other specified fees for 60 lower division credit hours at a Florida College and 60 credit hours at a State University. Your student can earn the same degree in the same amount of time as if they had completed all four years at a State University, and will do so knowing both of you have saved money.
1-Year Florida University Plan: The 1-Year Florida University Plan covers tuition, tuition differential fee and other specified fees at a State University for 30 credit hours -- one quarter of the 120 credit hours typically needed to obtain a bachelor’s degree. Our most affordable Prepaid Plan allows extended family members or friends to purchase a year or two as well, making saving for college a team effort.
4-Year Florida University Plan: The 4-Year Florida University Plan covers tuition, tuition differential fee and other specified fees at a State University for 120 credit hours -- the amount generally required for a bachelor’s degree. The Florida University System blankets the state and features two preeminent universities, Florida State University and the University of Florida.

Fun Facts About the Florida Prepaid College Plan
  • The Florida Legislature in 1987 created the Florida Prepaid College Program, founded on the commitment and dedication of Mr. Stanley G. Tate to provide Florida families with an affordable means to save for their children’s future college education.
  • The Stanley G. Tate Florida Prepaid College Program is the largest, longest-running and most successful prepaid program in the nation.
  • The first Florida Prepaid College Plans were sold in 1988.
  • More than 55 percent of prepaid plans in the nation are Florida Prepaid College Plans.
  • More than 1.6 million Florida Prepaid College Plans have been purchased, and more than $6.7 billion has been invested in Prepaid Plans by Florida families.
  • The Florida Prepaid Plan is -- and always has been -- financially sound. It is also guaranteed by the State of Florida.
  • More than 450,000 students have gone to college using Prepaid Plan benefits.

Focus on Oral Health for the Holidays with Colgate Total Advanced Health Mouthwash

The holidays are coming up, and that means lots of picture-taking! Needless to say, we want to show our best smiles when those cameras come out. That's why it's especially important to take care of our teeth and gums this time of year. It goes without saying that we should brush and floss daily, but for that extra oomph, we should add mouthwash to our daily routine. Mouthwash is important because it can reach those places that a brush or floss cannot.

The mouthwash I prefer is Colgate Total Advanced Health Mouthwash. Not only does it freshen breath, reduce plaque, and help prevent gingivitis, but it is also an amazing bacteria fighter! In fact, it's been shown to remove 24 times more bacteria than ordinary non-antibacterial mouthwashes. Needless to say, I'm happy to get harmful bacteria out of my mouth, which can also work its way into the rest of my body.

It's easy to use Colgate Total Advanced Health Mouthwash. First, shake it well to mix all of the ingredients together. Then, using the cap like a cup, measure the mouthwash and then rinse it around in your mouth for 30 seconds. Finally, spit (don't swallow). My mouth feels incredibly fresh and clean afterward. Best of all, I feel great in knowing that I'm taking good care of my mouth and ridding it of harmful bacteria.

Give a gift to yourself this holiday season by making your dental health top priority. Be sure that your daily routine includes brushing, flossing, and rinsing with Colgate Total Advanced Health Mouthwash! It's available at a store near you. And don't forget to smile for the camera!

Beauty Giveaway for Moisturizing Hand Wash and Hair Detangler Brush!

I have to admit that I'm always on the lookout for new beauty products, and I recently found two items that I have been using every single day because they're awesome. Check them out:

I have long, fine hair, and it always tangles when I try to comb it out after a shower. My Beauty Spot Color Rush Daily Hair Detangler Brush, however, is amazing! It gets all the tangles out of my hair without pulling or hurting. I use it every single day, and I'm amazed at how good my hair looks. This brush would be a lifesaver for mothers who struggle to comb out their daughter's long hair without pain. And I love the beautiful design -- it's available in blue, pink or yellow floral patterns. Plus, the ergonomic handle feels really good in my hand. It's easy to grip, and I've never dropped it while brushing my hair. This brush is totally my favorite, and I recommend it anyone, especially if you have long and/or fine hair.

I love the Casa Toscana Moisturizing Hand Wash! Its large 18-ounce size lasts a good long time, and the beautiful bottle looks great in my bathroom. It smells wonderful, and my hands always feel smooth and clean after using it. It's very moisturizing as it contains Vitamin E, Argan Oil, and Shea Butter. This is perfect for gift-giving, too!

I hope you'll pick up one or both of these beauty products. Treat yourself or get them for everyone on your holiday gift list!

One lucky winner will receive BOTH the My Beauty Spot Color Rush Daily Hair Detangler Brush and the Casa Toscana Moisturizing Hand Wash With Argan Oil + Shea Butter! Enter through the Rafflecopter form below. This giveaway is open to U.S. residents only and ends at 11:59 PM EST on Monday, November 6, 2017.

Poppy Mayberry: Return to Power Academy Book Tour, Guest Post and Giveaway for a Kindle Fire!

Poppy Mayberry: Return to Power Academy
(Nova Kids #2) by Jennie K. Brown
Publication Date: October 10, 2017
Publisher: Tantrum Books

Finding out you were wrong about something important can be a letdown. But Poppy is pleased to learn she's not just a Monday. She's a Cusper -- a weekday lucky enough to have TWO powers. Poppy's elation is short-lived when she, Ellie, Logan, and Sam return to Power Academy as camp counselors, only to find themselves out of their element and struggling with the new drama teacher and his disaster of a school musical. When some campers go missing, Poppy and her team of weekdays are on the case. Soon, Poppy begins to realize that much like her powers, the seemingly perfect town of Nova has some flaws, and the origin of her powers is as questionable as Headmistress Clothes-too-tight Larriby's choice in outfits. If only there were more days in the week!

Guest Post by the Author: The Road to Publication

My road to publication was not smooth. When I first wrote POPPY MAYBERRY, THE MONDAY six years ago, I had no idea how the publishing business worked. I thought you write a book, pitch it to some editors, and then eventually get a book deal. Boy, was I wrong! After joining and attending a few SCBWI events, I realized that if I wanted to get a traditional book deal, I’d need an agent -- the gatekeeper to the publishing world. After a few months querying agents, I got my first agent. She was amazing and loved POPPY just as much as I did. However, the editors she pitched to didn’t love it as much as we did, so I revised the manuscript. Right after the revision was complete, my then-agent announced to me that she was leaving the industry. So I was back to square one. After more rejections over the next few months, I landed a book deal for POPPY and an agent. It took another two years until POPPY MAYBERRY, THE MONDAY even published! I know now the road to publication is definitely a bumpy one.

Coming to Theaters on October 20: "Same Kind of Different as Me" ~ Plus a Giveaway for Fandango Tickets to See This Inspirational Film!

Release date: 10/20/17
Studio: Paramount Pictures/ PureFlix
Starring: Greg Kinnear, Renée Zellweger, Djimon Hounsou, Jon Voight

I am so excited to tell you about an upcoming film that is sorely needed in this world right now. It’s a film about kindness and forgiveness, and giving people second chances. I had tears in my eyes as I watched an extended clip from this film, and I know it will move you, as well, when you see it at theaters. Invite your family, your church groups, your friends, and everyone you know to see this movie! It’s a feel-good film that will hopefully inspire everyone who sees it to spread kindness and love wherever they go.

About the Film
“Nobody can help everybody, but everybody can help somebody.” Words of wisdom from a homeless drifter; words that never would be shared with the world if not for a wayward husband, a forgiving wife, and an unforgettable true story that brought the three of them together.

With more money than they could ever possibly need, Ron and Debbie Hall have everything they could ever want … except for a loving marriage. When Ron’s unfaithfulness is brought to light, Debbie invites him to stay—as long as he remains truthful and does what she asks of him. But when her request includes serving the homeless at an inner-city rescue mission, Ron would prefer to write a large check instead. Guided by her faith and spurred on by the dream of a homeless man she senses will change their city, Debbie befriends a disenfranchised man named Denver. More surprisingly, so does Ron. Despite vast differences, their lives begin to intersect, and they all are changed … forever.

Celebrate Halloween or Fall with These New Books for Kids of All Ages

Fall has arrived, and Halloween will be here before we know it. Typically, Halloween is all about the costumes and candy, but I think we should start a movement to make Halloween all about the books! Some awesome books for kids have crossed my desk recently that celebrate Halloween or the season of autumn. They're all great for Halloween gift-giving for kids of all ages. Check them out!

For Ages 2-6

Peep and Egg: I'm Not Trick-or-Treating
by Laura Gehl
Pictures by Joyce Wan

It's Halloween, and Peep is excited to go trick-or-treating with Egg. There's only one teensy problem: Egg is not trick-or-treating. It's way too scary. Too many monsters! But sometimes all you need to overcome your fears is a good friend by your side.

My favorite part: Peep tells funny Halloween jokes to make Egg feel less scared. Here's one: What do you call a witch at the beach? A sand-WITCH! Also, this is a Board Book, so it will withstand lots of handling by little hands!

Goldfish Ghost
by Lemony Snicket
Illustrations by Lisa Brown

Goldfish Ghost was born on the surface of the water in a boy's room. Feeling lonely, he sets out to find some company. As he floats over the neighborhood, past the fishing pier and into a cheerful seaside town, he discovers that not many people pay attention to ghosts. Off he floats, searching for the perfect home and the perfect friend ... and then he hears a voice ...

My favorite part: Goldfish Ghost learns that making friends isn't easy, but if we keep trying, there's a friend for everyone, especially when we look for someone with whom we have a lot in common.

Ages 4-8

Monster Trucks
by Joy Keller
Illustrations by Misa Saburi

It's off-season for monsters, but there's no rest for the undead! Monsters get to work -- paving roads, plowing snow, hauling much -- in their monster trucks. With a gentle bedtime ending, this not-too-scary story is perfect for younger monster and truck lovers.

My favorite part: This book is fun to read because it rhymes! It also teaches children that monsters won't bother them at night because they're too busy sleeping after a hard day at work.

Little Elliot, Fall Friends
by Mike Curato

Little Elliot and Mouse love the hustle and bustle of the city streets. But sometimes it feels like there are too many people, too many noises -- just too much! The friends decide to get out of town for a vacation in the countryside. There, they'll discover the sights and smells of autumn. Everything is more delicious when shared with a friend!

My favorite part: This book celebrates all of the best things about autumn: jumping in leaves, pumpkin patches, apple trees and pies!

For Ages 9-13

The Monster's Daughter
by Paul Gamble

During Jack Pearse's first week as an operative of the oddest top secret government agency ever -- the Ministry of SUITs -- he outsmarted a bear, survived a dinosaur stampede, and saved Northern Ireland from becoming the world's largest pirate ship. He thinks he's earned a bit of a rest. Unfortunately, with giant crabs staging jailbreaks, fancy bathing products blowing up bathrooms, and the Tooth Fairy coming after him with giant pincers, it looks like Jack and his incredibly dangerous partner, Trudy, are shaping up to have anther busy week.

My favorite part: I love the pages from the Ministry of SUITs Handbook that are spread throughout the book, which humorously describe and bust myths and mysteries (such as the monsters under your bed!).

Serafina and the Splintered Heart
by Robert Beatty

Something has happened to Serafina. She has awoken into a darkness she does not understand, scarred from a terrible battle, only to find that life at Biltmore Estate has changed in unimaginable ways. Old friends do unthinkable things and enemies seem all around.

A mysterious threat moves toward Biltmore, a force without a name, bringing with it violent storms and flooding that stands to uproot everything in its path. Serafina must uncover the truth about what has happened to her and find a way to harness her strange new powers before it's too late.

With only days to achieve the impossible, Serafina fights to reclaim herself as the guardian of Biltmore, friend of Braeden, daughter of her pa, and heroine of the Blue Ridge Mountains and all the folk and creatures that call them home.

My favorite part: This book is the third in a bestselling series, so readers who loved the first two books will definitely want to read this one!

For Kids Who Love Comics and Graphic Novels

Science Comics: Bats: Learning to Fly
Written and illustrated by Falynn Koch

Little Brown Bat has broken his wing. But fear not, little guy! Thanks to a friendly human, Little Brown Bat gets to recover at an animal rehabilitation center. While he's resting, he meets bat cousins from around the world. Giant fruit bats from Australia, insect-eating bats from the American Southwest, and even South America's vampire bat! All these new friends help Little Brown Bat understand why it's great to be batty.

My favorite part: This book is filled with fun facts for science lovers. For example, did you know that bats pollinate flowers, especially those that bloom only at night? Or that some bats are excellent at fishing?

Disclosure: I received complimentary books from the publishers. This post contains my Amazon affiliate link, and I will receive a small commission on purchases made through this link.
